REVIEW: Hippy Paste 100% Natural Deodorant by Earth Conscious

I have been trying to cut chemicals out of my beauty products for six years now, since I was pregnant with Ava. I began to worry about all the lotions and potions I was putting on to (and therefore in to) my skin. I’ve had varying amounts of success, but one thing I have never managed to find was a natural deodorant. I have even tried some crystals which you run under the tap and then rub over your arm pits. Literally useless.

So I was excited when I was offered a pot of Hippy Paste by Earth Conscious 100% Natural Deodorant to try*. It is all natural, with no parabens, aluminium, or toxins.

Hippy Paste Natural Deodorant Ingredients

The main ingredient is coconut oil, so it’s lovely and moisturising. I know what all of the other ingredients are too, which is very rare for a beauty product. Technically, you can eat it, though I don’t suppose it would taste all that good…Hippy Paste

HOW TO USE HIPPY PASTE NATURAL DEODORANT

To apply it, you dig a little out, and massage it under your arms. It’s quite hard and solid when you get it out of the tin (well, it is winter). Once you put it on, your body heat melts it so it’s really easy to apply. It smells lovely – I got the tropical one, which smells of lime, and there are other scents to choose from. The smell soon goes but it’s nice while it lasts.Hippy Paste Tropical

DOES HIPPY PASTE NATURAL DEODORANT ACTUALLY WORK?

The first day I used it, I sprayed one arm pit with my Sure anti-perspirant and put the Hippy Paste on the other. At the end of the day I couldn’t  smell any difference. I have been wearing it (on both sides) for a month now and it seems to be working pretty well. I wouldn’t have worn it this long if it hadn’t!

This is a deodorant, NOT an anti-perspirant. That’s because your body needs to sweat, to get rid of toxins. So using anti-perspirant is actually stopping your body from getting rid of toxins, so presumably they get absorbed back into your body?! Yuk! So this won’t stop you from sweating but it does help stop the sweaty smell. And my arm pits are nice and soft now too from the coconut oil and shea butter, bonus!

There is sometimes a bit of a smell at the end of the day, but it’s not offensive, (at least I don’t think it is, and no-one has said anything!) I think because there are no chemicals involved, it’s more of a natural smell, rather than that stale chemical smell you can get with normal anti-perspirants. Sorry if that’s too much information! I have a shower every morning anyway, so it’s not a big deal for me.

IS THIS NATURAL DEODORANT GOOD VALUE?

One pot costs £5 and after a month I have used this much:

Hippy paste after one month's use

So I’ll probably get four to six month’s use from it, though that’s a complete guess. I think that’s really good value. When it’s finished, the tin is completely recyclable (and the Jiffy Green envelope it arrived in also went into my recycling bin.) What a refreshing change, that fits in with my Live LAGOM sustainability goals.

We are in winter at the moment, so I can’t say how it will work in summer, but I am happy to keep using it on a day to day basis and see how it goes. In my experience, trying to go ‘green’ comes with a compromise – either in cost, or performance. This deodorant is a great price, and the performance is pretty good. So if you’re interested in a more sustainable, healthier lifestyle, I think it’s well worth a try.

Have you got any good tips about any other natural products that actually work? I’d love to hear them!

Yeah I was a bit worried about that but it was actually fine! I’m still wearing it so I’ll have to see how I get on when it gets warmer xx

That’s such a good point Rachel, I have mild asthma so the sprays are pretty bad for that, not to mention the chemicals! I like to give these things a try as you never know what you’re missing if you don’t! But it may not be for everyone xx

I must admit I use the strongest antiperspirant that I can get my hands on! I think I have a bit of paranoia about being sweaty! I think it would take me a bit of time to adjust to a using a deodorant instead of an antiperspirant. This is a really informative review which is making me think about trying something new.

Thanks Sarah, what I like it that it isn’t too expensive, unlike a lot of natural products, so even if you don’t get on with it, it won’t cost you a fortune! It would take time to adjust and I wasn’t sure at first but I really have got used to it now! xx

This sounds really interesting and might be great for my hubby who has allergies from normal deodrant. Angela

Ah yes it would be worth a try, there are quite a few fragrances, and as it’s only £5 it’s not too expensive if he doesn’t get on with it xx

Very intriguing, I have never really thought about anti-perspirants and the chemicals etc before. I actually cannot used any aerosol deodorants only roll ons otherwise my skin reacts, but I would worry about it being as effective, but it looks like it worked well 🙂

Yeah when you start reading about it, it’s pretty horrifying what goes into every day products. I figure if I can cut some out, it’s a step in the right direction!xx

This looks and sounds fab! I’ve been using a Lush natural deodorant but it leaves the dreaded white powder behind. I’ll definitely be trying this out.

Ah yes white powder isn’t the best look, is it! Let me know how you get on with it, I really hope you like it xx
