About this time last year, I wrote about the plans I had for our home. So how did we get on? Not very well, it turns out! We were so busy with work and life, we have only managed to tick off a couple of things. So this is my new and improved home improvement list for 2019.
Makeover Our Front Door
Last year I planned to replace the plastic front door we inherited with our house. It’s so 90s, and I’m not at all keen on the pattern of the frosting on the glass.
I made a Pinterest board of my dream front doors and got a quotation for a contemporary dark grey composite door. But we decided to spend that money on a holiday instead! I have also been seduced by the pink front doors of Instagram. Aren’t they gorgeous?

Which of these #prettypink doors is your favourite? We could do with a new front door, but no funds at the moment so I think painting the old PVC one would be a good and inexpensive way to cheer up our house. I’m obviously planning pink but my husband isn’t convinced. So instead of replacing it, I’ve decided to paint it. I’ve been to buy the paint, but I haven’t had a chance to actually paint it yet, so watch this space.
Frost our Living Room Bay Window
My next plan is to tackle our bay window. We have plain dark grey curtains, and some cheap IKEA voile curtains for privacy. I haven’t even hemmed the voiles, and they annoy me so much. I would love some shutters, but the quotes came in at over a thousand pounds. So that’s not going to be a priority any time soon! So instead, I am looking at patterned window film.
I have found a company that do the most gorgeous privacy film, in some lovely patterns. The Window Film Company have a fab selection of window films, including some by one of my favourite designers Miss Print.
I think ‘Saplings’ is my favourite. We had great success with window film in our girls’ playroom, so I know this will look great.
Dining Room Stools with Hairpin Legs
My next plan is to make a pair of stools for the girls to sit at our dining table, to match the breakfast bar we made last year – read more about it here.
We have some leftover worktop from our breakfast bar, so it would tie together nicely. I got as far as preparing the wood, but decided it would be better to make two stools instead of one bench as the girls are starting to elbow each other at the table and getting annoyed with each other.
We got our hairpin legs from The Hairpin Leg Company, and they have matching black ones in a bench height of 40cm. We are so impressed with the quality and look of the ones we have for the breakfast car, we won’t hesitate to buy from them again for the bench.
We’re also planning to get our table stripped. The dark varnish hides a lovely oak or ash solid table, and it’s crying out to be restored.
Tackling the Understairs Cupboard of Doom
Will 2019 be the year we finally organise our terrible mess of an understairs cupboard? I hope so as it’s been on my to do list since we moved in nearly five years ago. This large yer oddly shaped cupboard is great for hiding a multitude of clutter. But when you actually want to use any thing that’s hiding in there? Forget about it!
When we moved in, there were these hideous shelves on the right already there. They are pretty wobbly and I am expecting them to collapse at any time. We repurposed an old storage unit at the back of the cupboard, but it just doesn’t work.
Every time I go to IKEA, I look at their shelving systems but need to work out exactly what we need. I’m thinking something along these lines from IKEA.
As the ceiling is sloped because of the stairs above, it’s quite an awkward shape so I think a modular system would be the best way to make it work. Or getting something purpose built if we can afford it. I have a Pinterest board for this cupboard, don’t these look fab?
Inject Some Character Into Our Bedroom
Last year I dedicated a whole post to my dreams for our bedroom. It’s perfectly serviceable, but rather dull. So I’d love to inject some colour, and maybe even attempt wallpaper for the first time.
Again I have made a Pinterest board that you can follow if you like. I think I am going to move away from my usual pale grey/white scheme and try a dark blue or green.
I’d like to try an eco-friendly paint for this project, and see that Earthborn have a few gorgeous dark greens and blues, I fancy ‘Toy Soldier’ – what do you think?
A Reminder of 2018’s Home Improvements
Although this list does seem quite long, we actually did make quite a bit of progress last year. Here are a few of my favourite home improvement projects from 2018.
Do you have any plans for your home this year? I’d love to hear about them, please leave me a comment.
