We thought we’d brave Olney today, to watch the world-famous pancake race.
The last time I went, I was a child, and I’ve wanted to go again for years, but never managed it.
So, today was the day and I have never seen this little market town so busy!
We overheard one lady say “They shouldn’t have organised this at half term.”ย Um. Shrove Tuesday. The beginning of Lent. Kind of impossible to move!!
I met up with eight other mums, and we had seven pre-schoolers and seven in the buggies, so progress was slow. Very slow.
I’d be lying if I said we had a stress-free morning – most of the kids had balloons on sticks, so there were quite a few explosions and tears, and then the rather sharp sticks left over…
But weirdly, trying to keep that many kids safe and together was kind of less stressful than just keeping an eye on my own two! These ladies are amongst my best mummy friends and I can rely on them to keep my kids as safe as their own.
We couldn’t get near the kids’ races, so crept our way to the Church Hall for tea and pancakes. The queue was looooong but there was music to keep the kids entertained.

We finally got in and the girls tucked into their pancake. Ava loved it, Thea was not so impressed. Though she was very excited that she got orange squash! Hats off to the ladies and gents cooking up these pancakes – they were delicious!

Then a quick dash outside for the race!

It was all over in minutes but the kids enjoyed it! Then another slow walk to a very muddy park for some extreme playing.
