Shampoo bars. A great solution for living a more eco-friendly life, but not, in my experience, always the best performers, sadly. Although I have found some good ones, I’ve been mainly disappointed by solid shampoo and conditioner in the past. Especially conditioner; all the ones I’ve tried have been waxy and unpleasant. But, I decided to give it one last shot. So I bought Kitsch plastic-free solid purple shampoo and conditioner bars, so I could review them for you.
These shampoo and conditioner bars are purple-toned, for blonde, silver and highlighted hair, but they have versions for all hair types. So read on to see if these water-less solid purple shampoo and conditioners bars would be good for your hair.
Introducing Kitsch Purple Toning Solid Shampoo and Conditioner Bars for Blonde, Silver, Highlighted and Coloured Hair
As my hair has both dyed roots and bleached lengths, any shampoo and conditioner I use has to be colour safe. And because I want to cut as many chemicals from my life as I can, it has to be non-toxic. And these bars are also plastic-free, which is a huge bonus in my fight against plastic use. So these purple toning shampoo and conditioner bars from Kitsch fit the bill, on paper at least.
Kitsch say:
- The world’s first solid purple shampoo and conditioner bar with Biotin.
- Safe for blondes, grey and white hair: colour-treated, highlighted, and natural.
- Neutralises unwanted brassiness and yellow undertones.
- Free from parabens, phthalates, silicones, sulfates, and artificial fragrance.
- Reduces single-use plastic: saves two bottles of liquid shampoo/conditioner.
Both the Kitsch Purple Toning Solid Shampoo Bar and the matching Purple Toning Conditioner Bar score ‘Excellent’ on the Yuka app.
How to Use Purple-Toning Shampoo and Conditioner Solid Shampoo Bars
Solid shampoo and conditioner bars are quite different from the more common liquid versions. They do take a bit of getting used to!
First, wet your hair, then rub the shampoo bar (in this case, it’s a handy S for Shampoo shape) over your head. It will lather, but not as much as you may be used to. Leave it on for one to three minutes, depending on how much of a toning effect you’d like. Rinse and repeat. After the first wash, I found my hair felt a bit tangled with a slight waxy residue feel. But the second wash made it feel cleaner, although still a little heavy and tangled.
Next, use the conditioner bar (the C for Conditioner shaped bar) to paint down from the mid lengths to the ends of your hair. Then use your hands to distribute it, and then comb through with a wide tooth comb. This is where the magic happens: the conditioner from the bar transforms into a silky, light conditioner that makes detangling a breeze. It’s by far the best conditioner bar I’ve ever used.
Then simply rinse well and style as usual.

Kitsch Purple-Toning Shampoo and Conditioner Bars Results on My Dyed and Bleached Hair
These are the before and after photos from the first time I used the Kitch purple shampoo and conditioner bars. I’m impressed by the results. The first photo is before I used the purple bars. The middle photo is straight after I used them for the first time after blow-drying my hair – you can see it’s shinier, and also a little less brassy after one use. But after two uses, you can see the colour is significantly cooler in tone, just how I like it!

Do These Solid Shampoo and Conditioner Bars Actually Work?
In a word, yes! In my experience, Kitsch Purple Shampoo and Conditioner Solid Shampoo Bars work well to cleanse hair without stripping it, and tone down brassiness beautifully. They also leave hair nice and soft and shiny. And this plastic-free shampoo and conditioner is also much better for the planet. They say they save two plastic bottles of liquid shampoo or conditioner, but they’ve saved me way more than that!

Here is a photo of my hair after using Kitsch Purple Shampoo and Conditioner Solid Shampoo Bars. I dried it with a hairdryer but didn’t use any straighteners. It’s shiny, healthy-looking and manageable, and doesn’t have the yellowy brassy tones it had developed.
The colour hasn’t faded at all, even over a month after colouring. So all in all, although it’s not the cheapest natural haircare, in my opinion, it is worth it.
