Looking for a plastic-free natural deodorant that actually works? You’re in the right place.

Over the past ten years or so I have tested loads of natural deodorants, with a lot of disappointing results. However I have found a few natural deodorants that not only work well, but are also plastic-free and zero waste.

We Love The Planet’s plastic free, zero waste, toxin free, vegan, natural deodorant is a bit more affordable than my favourite natural deodorant from The Natural Deodorant Co., so read on to find out if you should give it a try too.

But first, a bit about why you might want to use deodorant instead of anti-perspirant.

What’s the Difference Between Deodorant and Anti-Perspirant?

Typical antiperspirant deodorants function by preventing perspiration. They generally use aluminum salts to block the pores, stopping or reducing the release of sweat. When some sweat manages to escape, the deodorant works to minimize or mask the resulting odour when it reacts with the air. Essentially, the antiperspirant component aims to prevent sweat from exiting the armpit, and the deodorant part is useful when some perspiration does break through.

Deodorants don’t prevent sweating; instead, they eliminate the bacteria that causes unpleasant odors. This lets you naturally perspire without worries about body odour. While most conventional deodorants use alcohol to combat bacteria, it can be harsh and affect not only the odour-causing bacteria but also other beneficial bacteria on your skin. Ever experienced a stinging sensation under your arms after shaving? That’s probably alcohol entering your open pores. Yuk.

Why Choose a Natural Deodorant?

Natural deodorant will not stop you sweating, as it’s not an anti-perspirant. Instead, natural deodorant neutralises the smell that happens when sweat comes into contact with bacteria.

Most anti-perspirant deodorants contain ingredients that I choose not to put on my skin, or at least minimise as much as I can. These ingredients include alcohol, triclosan, aluminium, pthalates, parabens, propylene glycol and artificial fragrances.

Thankfully, there are natural deodorants that work so well to eliminate the smell, whist allowing your body to do what it should do: sweat. I know this may not be for everyone, and that’s fine. But if you are looking for a natural deodorant that actually works, and doesn’t make your skin react, this is for you!

About We Love The Planet’s Plastic-Free Natural Deodorant

I’ve been using The Natural Deodorant Co. deodorants for several years now and these deodorants have never let me down. But at around £12.50 a jar, it’s not the cheapest option. (They do last a long time, but I’m always looking for a more affordable alternatives to my natural beauty products.)

As We Love The Planet’s natural deodorant sticks are around £9 a tube I think it’s worth trying one.

They say:

“We Love The Planet natural deodorant keeps your skin feeling soft and moisturised; keeping your pores clear to help you fight off body odour the natural way. The formula does not use any triclosans, phthalates, SLS, parabens or any aluminium, which keeps the deodorant biodegradable and comfortable on the skin.”

The all-natural formula is biodegradable, and suitable for septic tanks. It’s certified cruelty free and vegetarian (but not Vegan – they do have a Vegan version but I have not tried that.) This natural deodorant doesn’t contain microbeads, SLS, parabens, triclosan, phthalates or palm oil.

Review of We Love The Planet’s Plastic-Free Natural Deodorant

I’ve tried several different scents, and so have my daughters. My favourite is the orange scent, and one daughter likes lavender. They all work well apart from the sensitive one, which didn’t work.

My other daughter has very sensitive skin, and she found that the Sensitive version was ok for her skin, but didn’t actually work on odour control so we gave up on that one. She found the other ones irritated her underarms, so she had to stop using them.

My Verdict on We Love The Planet’s Natural Deodorant Sticks

I find We Love The Planet plastic-free natural deodorants work perfectly most of the year, but haven’t quite cut it for the very hot days in summer. So for that reason, I am going to use them for about 80% of the time, and use my trusty Natural Deodorant Co Active Deodorant Balm for the height of summer.

And I won’t buy the Sensitive version again because it wasn’t effective for us.

Which Plastic-Free Natural Deodorant Stick Should I Choose?

This all-natural plastic-free deodorant is available in several scents: Fresh, Mint, Orange, Lavender and Sweet. (Sweet is not to my taste, it is quite a talcum powder scent). They come in a cardboard tube. Try to keep it dry, I have mine on my dressing table rather than in the bathroom.

Ingredients vary slightly depending on which scent you choose, these are the ingredients for my favourite Orange variety:

Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sodium Bicarbonate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Coco-Caprylate / Caprate, Macadamia Seed Oil Polyglyceryl-6 Esters Behenate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Citrus Nobilis (Mandarin Orange) Peel Oil, Limonene, Hypericum Perforatum Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Linalool.

What If You’re Sensitive to Bicarbonate of Soda?

As you can see in the ingredients above, Sodium Bicarbonate is listed as the second ingredient. This makes it effective, but it can be irritating to sensitive skin. If you are sensitive to Bicarbonate of Soda, this natural deodorant may not be suitable for you.

What About A Transition Period?

Some people report a transition period when swapping to a natural deodorant, as the body adjusts to not having antiperspirants. Personally I have never found this, but if you do, try to stick it out if you can!
