Powdered Oat Milk? What is this Sustainable Magic?

I didn’t even know powdered oat milk existed until recently. I used to use cartons of oat milk at home and request it in my coffee when I go out. It’s so nice and creamy, and because it is naturally slightly sweet, I find I can skip adding sugar to my coffee. But at home, I sometimes find I end up having to throw some away, as it goes off before I can use it all. I’ve made my own oat milk before, but it’s pretty time consuming, and wasn’t ever so smooth. It also separated a lot in the fridge if not used straight away.

So I was very interested to hear about Overherd Oat Milk Drink, which is instant oat milk powder. You can mix up at home in whatever quantities you like. No more waste! And 90% of oat milk in cartons is water. So it makes much more sense to add the water at home, right? So Overherd makes the oat powder 10x lighter to transport, saving C02. It sounds like a great sustainable solution. But does Overherd taste nice and mix well? Let’s find out!

Meet Overherd Oat Drink Powder

Overherd sent me a smaller version of their Oatmilk Powder Starter Set (ยฃ16.99). That contains a 600ml reusable glass shaker bottle, bamboo scoop and a resealable pouch of 800g of oat drink powder. That’s enough to make 8 litres of fresh oat milk. (I got a 400g version). It all arrives in a cardboard box, with protective paper padding. That means it’s easy to recycle

I’m a big fan of bamboo for its eco qualities so I’m pleased the scoop is made of it.

Is Overherd Oat Drink Cheaper than Other Oat Milk?

When you buy on subscription, Overherd is ยฃ1.37 a litre. I looked up prices of supermarket pre-mixed oat drink and it goes from ยฃ1.45 a litre for Sainsbury’s own brand, to over ยฃ2 for Oatly. So, in my opinion, Overherd is a great option to save money, and packaging.

The regular price of an 800g pouch of Overherd is ยฃ12.99, and if you subscribe, it’s ยฃ10.99 plus ยฃ2.99 delivery. This powdered oat milk is also available in a smaller 400g pouch, which is ยฃ6.99 or ยฃ5.99 on subscription. This is a good way to test it out to see if you like it, or to take on your travels.

It couldn’t be easier to mix Overherd Oat Milk Drink. Just fill up the glass bottle with fresh water to the ml you want (200, 400 or 600 ml). Add a level scoop of oat milk powder (20g) for each 200ml of water. Pop the lid on and give it a good shake, and pour it out through the little spout. It’s fresh oat milk in an instant. You can also use it like powdered coffee creamer, just adding a spoonful and mixing it into your coffee.

This bottle is a new version, which is easier to pour from and shake up. You’ll see the old version in some of these photos, but if you order Overherd powdered oat milk, you’ll receive the new style bottle.

How I Use Overherd Powdered Oat Milk

I’ve been using Overherd in place of my usual pre-made oat milk. I’m pleased to say it’s the perfect replacement for me. The powder is silky smooth, and mixes really easily in the glass shaker. Then I can store any leftovers in the fridge door. I love that you can mix just what you need, so there’s zero waste. It’s not quite as creamy as the carton oat milk, but I actually prefer that. You could add extra oat milk powder or use less water to customise it to your own preferred level of creaminess.

Overherd Powdered Oat Milk with Porridge Is My Favourite Breakfast

I have been trying Overherd Oat Milk Drink to mix my porridge, and it works perfectly. I use two scoops of powdered oat milk, mixed with 400ml of water. This gives me more than enough to make the porridge, and pour over it when it’s cooked. This powdered oat milk mixes perfectly in the glass shaker, which has handy measurements on the side.

Overherd Oat Drink Powder Makes Great Smoothies

A vegan green smoothie made with Overherd oat milk

I used Overherd to make a green smoothie, and it worked perfectly. The creaminess really compliments the avocado. I just shook up the powdered oat milk in the shaker and added it to my blender, along with my favourite unflavoured protein powder, and fruit and veg. I’ll be trying it with a chocolate flavour next.

Overherd Instant Oat Milk Powder is Great for Coffee, and Camping!

It works really well in coffee. I also made pasta sauce with it, and it worked perfectly. I think it’ll be great for camping, and to have in the cupboard, ready for you to use when you need it. You can also order a cute little travel tin, to make it easy to take away with you. it holds 85g so it’s ideal for a weekend away.

Oat Milk with Tea?

My cuppa is where I usually draw the line for oat milk, I find it too creamy. If you are used to full fat milk, or oat milk in tea, I think Overherd will probably be fine for you. All the things that make Overherd Oat Drink Powder so great for coffee (it froths so well!), smoothies and porridge (the creamy texture and ever so slightly sweet flavour) mean I don’t love it in tea. I’ve found this with pre-mixed oat milk from cartons or bottles, so I was expecting it. Having said that, I have used it a couple of times in tea, and it’s been fine, so I think if I continue using it, I’ll get used to it.

Why is Powdered Oat Milk Better for The Environment?

Plant based milk alternatives have been shown to have a lower carbon footprint than dairy. Ethical Consumer say.

“For each litre of dairy milk produced, it has almost three times the carbon footprint of the next highest emitter, rice milk.” Almond milk produces less greenhouse gasses per litre of milk (0.9kg). But it is very water intensive (371.46 litres of water per litre of milk). Oat milk is a better all rounder in my opinion. It uses less water (48.24 l of water per litre) and much less greenhouse gasses than dairy (0.9kg per litre vs 3.15kg for milk.)

But what about the packaging of premade plant milks?

This is a downside in my opinion. We get our milk delivered in reusable glass bottles, but plant milks are usually packaged in Tetra Paks.

According to news agency Reuters, only 45% of local authorities send Tetra Pak waste to the right recycling facilities. Whilst in Europe, Tetra Pak recycling rates average 50%, and only about 25% globally.

Since learning that, I’ve been trying to reduce our use of them. We have quite an extensive recycling system that fights for space in our pantry cupboard under the stairs. The recyclable pouches Overherd oat milk drink comes in is 100% recyclable LDPE, and can go in our regular plastic recycling bin. I’m under no illusion that all plastic waste gets recycled. But the pouch is physically lighter and smaller than a Tetra Pak carton. It’s also made of one material, rather than mixed materials. So it should be easier to recycle. Hopefully green tech will make recycling better in future.

Will I Stick with Overherd Oat Milk Powder?

Swapping from bulky, difficult to recycle, and more expensive pre-made oat milk to Overherd powdered oat milk is a no brainer. There’s less waste (in terms of packaging and the oat milk itself). It’s cheaper, and it comes delivered to my door so I don’t have to lug it back from the shop. That’s a win/win in every way, so I will be continuing to use Overherd Powdered Oat Drink.
