How To Make A Crowd-Pleasing Chocolate Pizza

If you know me in real life, you may have experienced the legendary chocolate pizza at one of my families’ parties. It was a crowd pleaser when I was a kid, and my mum made it for a lot of our birthday parties. She got the idea when we lived in America. When people first hear about chocolate pizza, they often think it’s a strange idea, as they imagine a normal pizza base, with cheese and tomato, plus chocolate. But the reality is oh so much better and more delicious. There are no tomatoes, no cheese, and only sweet chocolate toppings.

Just look at all these gooey, chocolatey layers, melting into each other. Mouthwatering, right?

What is a Chocolate Pizza?

Our chocolate pizza is a big chocolate chip cookie, the size of a pizza, topped with melted chocolate, and crushed chocolate sweets, cut into slices with a pizza wheel.

Chocolate pizza is a brilliant party food, for all ages, as it’s big enough that lots of people can have a bit, and looks amazing when you bring it out.

It makes a great treat with a cup of tea too!

Can You Make a Gluten-Free Chocolate Pizza?

Chocolate pizza is a great one to make for gluten-free guests, as it works really well with gluten-free flour (I like Dove’s Farm Gluten Free Flour best). As long as you don’t use any pizza toppings with wheat in them (for example Malteasers) then it’s really easy to make this chocolate pizza as a gluten-free chocolate pizza. Just substitute the flour with gluten-free flour and carry on.

Making a chocolate pizza is easy and fun, though it does take a while to chop the chocolate. You just make a big chocolate chip cookie, cook it, and top it.

Read on for the instructions on how to make a delicious chocolate pizza.

Chocolate Pizza Ingredients

For the ‘pizza’ base:

210g plain flour (all purpose flour for my American friends)
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda for my American friends)
1/2 teaspoon salt
140g softened butter
70g granulated sugar
90g soft brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (this is the one I recommend, it’s amazing)
170g chocolate chips (I use plain chocolate but milk chocolate is also delicious)

For the ‘pizza’ toppings:

170g dark chocolate, chopped, or chocolate chips
170g white chocolate, chopped, or chocolate chips
2 or 3 chocolate bars, coarsely chopped, for example Crunchie, Fudge Bars,
2 or 3 small packets of chocolate sweets, for example Smarties, Chocolate Orange segments, M&Ms, Milky Way Magic Stars, whichever chocolate treats you like!

Chocolate Pizza Method

How to Make A Chocolate Pizza Base

Start by heating your oven to 180 degrees/375 degrees.

Grease a large round pizza baking tin, and if it has a perforated base like mine, line it with baking paper so it doesn’t fall through the holes!

Sieve the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a small bowl. You can use gluten-free flour too, it works really well.

Cream the butter and both kinds of sugar together in a large bowl. I used an electric whisk but you can do it by hand.

Beat the egg and vanilla extract into the butter and sugar mix.

Gradually add the flour mix to the wet ingredients, and beat well.

Stir in the chocolate chips.

Spreading a big chocolate chip cookie into a pizza base

Spread evenly over the baking tray: the cookie dough mix will spread a little so you don’t have to get it right to the sides. It’s quite sticky, so using the back of a metal spoon is easiest.

Try to get it in as close to a circle as you can.

Bake for about 20 minutes until it’s golden.

How to Make the Chocolate Pizza Toppings

While your giant chocolate chip cookie is baking, chop up your dark and white chocolates and the chocolate sweets.

Three types of chocolate roughly chopped

The two kinds or chocolate can be roughly chopped, as they’ll melt anyway – if you’re in a hurry, use chocolate chips.

Keep them separate in three bowls, as you’re going to add them in three layers.

After you remove your chocolate chip cookie from the oven, scatter the dark chocolate chunks or chips over the surface, and leave for a few minutes to melt. Spread evenly over the ‘pizza’ base, leaving the ‘crust’ clear.

Next do the same step with the white chocolate chunks or chips. You can either leave them to melt for a few minutes and spread with a spatula to make a pretty marbled effect, or leave as chunks, so they look a bit like mozarella.

Finally, scatter your chocolate sweets evenly over your chocolate pizza.

Leave to cool.

Because this is a really rich treat, I usually cut it into smaller pieces horizontally too, so they don’t look like slices but still taste amazing!
