Do you use a face serum? I like to use them morning and evening, beneath my moisturiser. I’ve tried lots of natural face serums in the past, with mixed results. For the past month, I’ve been using Esse Plus Intensity Serum every morning, before my sunscreen. At a hefty £120 a bottle, this is easily the most expensive skincare product I’ve ever tried. So is Esse Plus Intensity Serum worth the price tag? Read my review to find out!

About Esse

I’ll start with a bit of background to Esse. As a natural skincare brand, they say they “fight ageing in an entirely new way”, with probiotics. We’re used to hearing about good microbes in probiotic drinks, but they are apparently also linked to skin health. We all have trillions of microbes living on, and in our skin.

“We create an environment on the skin that favours the growth of beneficial microbes so that they can out-compete pro-ageing species. To do this, we use prebiotics to selectively feed good microbes and have included probiotic microbes in some products to deliver specific results.”

About Esse Plus Intensity Serum

The Intensity Serum is designed to reduce the look of wrinkles, and has some pretty impressive claims.

“The key ingredient is Mafane extract from the island of Reunion. This extract contains spilanthol that has the effect of relaxing muscle in a similar way to Botox. This extract showed a strong wrinkle reduction effect in 75% of subjects tested. The effect lasts for 24 hours but there is a cumulative effect if used every day. An extract of Devil’s Claw and the firming active from Kigelia ensure that regular use also improves the appearance of lines and wrinkles over the long term.”

Esse Plus Intensity Serum Results

Esse Plus Intensity Serum comes in a glass pump, housed in a premium cardboard carton. It certainly look and feels luxurious, and will be easy to recycle when it’s finished.

The serum is orangey brown, and feels light and not at all greasy. It sinks in within moments and leaves skin ready for moisturiser.

It smells quite unusual, I can’t really describe it, but the fragrance fades quickly. Unlike many other serums I’ve tried in the past, it doesn’t feel like it’s moisturising. In fact it makes skin feel tighter, but not dryer. Moisturiser goes over it really well. I do think you can feel it tightening skin, if not lifting it. My skin certainly looks more radiant and I think a little firmer. Several people have told me I look well since using it, and I always think that’s a like saying you look younger!

I took some ‘before and after’ photos. The first was bare skin before using the serum. The second is bare skin after using it every morning for two weeks. Can you see any difference? I think the lines around my eyes and mouth look a little softer and more smoothed out.

So for me, the Intensity Serum is a winner for me, and I’m looking forward to seeing the results longer term. If I could afford to buy it again, I probably would, but I don’t have enough money for that, sadly!
