I have had a treat this weekend – two and a half hours of folding paper with the lovely Est from Origami-Est. I went to one of her workshops at Southwood Living near Milton Keynes last year, and it was brilliant. We made origami fairy lights and I was so happy with how they turned out. So when I noticed there were more workshops on offer, my sister and I booked straight on.
Making an Origami Lampshade
This time, we each made a mini origami lampshade, which was a bit more challenging than the fairy lights. We just needed some pieces of paper and a ruler to start off with. It took me ages to choose my paper, but I went for a navy blue with a pink paint splatter effect.
I went a bit wrong, and Est had to help me, a moment my sister Debbie caught on camera!
I kept getting carried away talking to Est and the other lovely ladies in the class. You really need to pay attention, otherwise it goes a bit wrong. Luckily the extra folds I put in didn’t show up, phew! I’m really pleased with how it turned out.
I had planned to pop it on a wall light in our hall, but it’s actually a bit too small.
So I decided to pop it on our mantlepiece and fill it with fairy lights.
I have bought a kit to make a matching large lampshade, which I am excited to make. I think they will go in our bedroom eventually.
Set took a time-lapse video of us folding our lampshades and it turned out really well.
How to Make Your Own Origami
Est runs frequent workshops, so pop over to her website to check if any are near you.
Have you ever tried Origami? I think it’s really fun and great for stress release as you really have to concentrate!

I have Esther’s book and often make little things from it. I love origami. It’s amazing what you can make with paper.
I really need to get the book! I’m attempting the big version of this lampshade next, I’m a bit nervous! xx
What an amazing workshop, I’d have loved to do something like this. The finished product looks beautiful, love the colours X #HomeEtc
Thanks I am going to try the big one next, wish me luck! xx
Wow, I love your lampshade. That paper is beautiful. The workshop looks like lots of fun too – I wish I lived closer!
Thanks Rachel, she does workshops in London and Bristol too if that’s any good! xx
I’ve done one of Est’s workshops before, she’s so talented. I love origami (event if I’m a bit rubbish at it!).
