What’s in My Craft Kit for Adults?
The great thing about this craft kit is that you get two crafts in one: concrete making and candle making! My craft kit arrived in a brown cardboard box, with minimal packaging, all recyclable. You receive a bag of concrete, a bag of sand, and a bag of black powder dye pigment. You’ll also get two cups which act as the mould, a tub of eco-friendly soy wax flakes, a candle wick, stirrer and a teabag, so you can enjoy a cuppa as you craft. There are also instructions.

Step 1: Make The Concrete Candle Holder
It’s easier than I thought to make the concrete holder, but it is a little bit messy. So do this part outside, or lay down some newspaper. You mix the concrete and sand, by pouring one into the other, sealing the bag and giving it a shake. Next you add water and squish it about. It’s a really clever way to mix the concrete, and quite satisfying.

Once you get it to the right consistency, you can pour some of it into the leftover bag and add some black dye to one part. This means you can get a marbled effect. However I realised when I did this that I hadn’t mixed the original concrete enough, so I ended up mixing it together in the mould, so it was all the same colour.
Next put the second cup inside the bigger cup and press it down, securing it with tape. Knock out the air bubbles by tapping the side, and leave it for 48 hours.

Step 2: Unwrap The Concrete Candle Holder
I couldn’t wait to remove the paper cups to see how my pot looked. The inside cup twisted out easily. I had to snip the top of the outer cup with scissors and then tear it off, revealing my concrete beneath.

I was pleased with my candle holder, as I’d managed to get it fairly even and level, and it looked pleasingly industrial. The red cup had dyed the top edge of the concrete, which was a nice surprise!
There were a few little flakes of concrete on the edge, and I just brushed them off with my hand.
Step 3: Add the Soy Wax to Make a Candle
Next, you just pop the soy way into the microwave, in the tub it arrived in. The instructions said for 2 minutes but it took over 5 in our microwave. Just keep checking on it to make sure it’s not boiling. Once it’s all melted, you could add some essential oils to make the candle smell divine. Then just pop the wick in to the centre of your concrete pot, and carefully pour the wax in. Use the stirer to keep the wick in place, and it takes about half an hour to solidify again. And you’re done!

My Finished Handmade Concrete Candle
I’m so pleased with how my concrete candle holder and natural soy wax candle look. I love the dark grey finish, and the odd imperfection shows it’s hand made. It’s lovely and chunky. When I’ve burned the candle, I can use it as a pen holder, or add a little plant to it.
