How Our Utility Room Makeover Is Going

I confessed to my utility room of doom aย while back.ย We’ve been slowly but surely working on ourย utility room makeover. It’s not finished yet but it’s useable. After over a week with no washing machine, I can’t tell you how happy I am with our utility room makeover.

The Bosch washing machine was very kindly given to us by a friend of a friend when they moved to a new build with its own washing machine. The roomย still needs some shelves and storage added. But when you look at how truly awful it was before, I think you’ll agree it’s a big improvement.

Ugh, just looking at that awful floor is making me feel sick! Ryan had to take our old washing machine to the dump as it was beyond fixing. We used the remaining paint from the rest of the downstairs to paint the whole room. It’s Crown’s Sail White, which is an off white with a touch of grey.

It was all going well… until the old paint started peeling off!

This was the point where I wished I’d never started!

So what we thought was going to be a quick job (the room is tiny) turned into a bit of a mission. I decided to peel off as much of the paint as came off easily, and then paint it all andย cross my fingers.

The whole family helped with our Utility room makeover

Ava and Thea really enjoyed helping peel the paint off. Ryan, not so much. He was despairing of the fact that we were even decorating it, as “Noone ever goes in there anyway.” (You can imagine my reaction to that!)

Ryanย had to saw out the worktop above the washing, so that we could move the appliances around to a more sensible orientation.

Was white the best choice for a utility room floor?

After we’d painted, my brother very kindly came round to fit the new vinyl flooring. Technically we should have screeded the floor, but we thought we’d just chance our luck and lay it straight onto the floor. Luckily it paid off. I chose some white flooring from Flooring Superstoreย and it cost ยฃ65 including the adhesive and delivery. In retrospect, I think white was ย bit of a foolish colour to choose, as it shows up every speck of dirt. I was just so desperate to make the gloomy room as bright as possible, I didn’t really think it through!

Next, we need to put up some IKEAย ALGOT drying racksย and hooks.ย We don’t want to spend a lot of money on it, as I am the only one who goes in there, but I do spend quite a lot of time in there!

So what do you think of our progress so far? I can’t believe how different it looks, and how much more user friendly already.

It looks so much better. I love a good utility, I’m adding more cupboards in mine tomorrow and it’s so sad how excited I am about this! Well done, the White floor is fine, it feels nice and clean and looks bright for a small space #HomeEtc

    1. He he I’m glad it’s not just me who gets ridiculously excited about this stuff! Hope yours goes well xx

  2. It looks a whole lot better already!! I agree, white shows the dirt but it’s also brilliant at brightening up darker rooms. We have a similar size utility room and it ends up being a bit of a dumping ground. I gave it a bit of a makeover earlier this year and added a lot more storage and it works way better now. Good luck with the rest!

    1. Thanks so much Rachel, we have had multiple trips to IKEA so I’m just about there now, hurrah! xx

    1. Thanks lovely, I have been to IKEA three times to get the shelves, and keep getting the wrong ones, ha ha! Nearly finished now xx

  4. YES!!!! Yes to white floors โ€” gorgeous โ€” I love the fact that it shows the dirt. Who wants a floor to hide the dirt? I want to know when my floor is dirty, thank you very much!!! And I also love that you’re experiencing the same kind of issues as me…. we had an absolute nightmare with our recent makeover!! Plaster falling off, rotten skirting boards… but it’s SO worth it when it’s done isn’t it? Love this Becky!!! xx Caro #HomeEtc

    1. Ha ha that is so true about wanting to know when the floor is dirty, brilliant. Not sure I could handle it in the dining room though with the girls dropping food every single meal! xx
