Am I alone in dreading the alarm clock wake up call? I don’t think anyone loves it, but I think it’s fair to say that some people are more suited to mornings than others. I am definitely not a morning person! So anything to ease the transition from sleep to some semblance of wakefulness is very welcome!

Lumie sent me one of their latest sunrise/sunset wake-up alarm clocks to try, to see if it could help me be less of a grouch in the morning. It’s a tall order!

A Nicer Way to Wake Up with Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300

About Lumie

Lumie are the original wake up clock designer, specialising in light therapy. They’ve been researching, designing and developing light therapy products for over 25 years. Their first wake up light came out back in 1993 and they now sell eight body clocks, ranging from £39.98 to £199.

Lumie is certified to ISO 13485 Medical Devices, Quality Management Systems standard. Their lights come with 45-day trial and 3-year warranty.

Apparently, the British Swimming team use Lumie Bodyclocks to get them up bright and early for training on dark, winter mornings.

How Light Can Help You Become a ‘Morning Person’

Lumie say;

“Bodyclock Shine 300 uses LED technology to produce smooth changes of light and colour for a lovely, realistic sunrise and sunset. As your room gets dark, the light-sensitive display switches off to help you switch off. A sleep/wake light like Bodyclock Shine 300 is not just a nicer way to start the day. It can help beat the winter blues and is a useful complement to a lightbox in treating SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).”

As well as all the clever features which you can read about below, this alarm clock also looks fantastic. It’s simple and sleek, and the textured grey cloth around the bottom makes it look at home in any house.

Fall Asleep to a ‘Sunset’

Mimicking the light decreasing as the sun sets can help you get ready for sleep, as the fading light gives your body the green light to start making melatonin, the hormone that makes us sleepy.

The Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 alarm clock has a clever setting to mimic the sunrise and sunset. You can make it bright enough to read at night, and set it so it fades gradually to your own timings. I find it does help sooth me to sleep at night.

It gives a lovely warm glow, and you can also have a variety of soothing sounds to lull you to sleep. These sounds include tropical birds, blackbird, osprey, goats, guzheng, cafe, steam train, thunderstorm, waves, crickets, kitten purring, tree frogs, ping pong, white noise. I find some of them much more relaxing than others! You can also fall asleep to the FM radio if you prefer.

Keep it Dark at Night

This alarm clock is dark unless you tap the top. This is great for me, as I like it to be pitch black and find any light annoying. But if you prefer, you can have a dim nightlight switched on.

Wake Up to A ‘Sunrise’

The best part about this clever alarm clock is the sunrise feature. Lumie say it “helps to regulate your sleep-wake cycle and has even been shown to boost mood, energy and productivity levels for the rest of the day.” I can’t claim to be more productive, but it is a much more pleasant way to wake up than the awful jolt of a blaring alarm.

I have mine set to begin the sunrise effect at about 7, with the radio coming on after 15 minutes. The light continues to grow brighter as the radio plays, so it’s a much more gradual way to wake up.

It’s really helped me wake up this winter, during the dark mornings – I could have done with it when I was getting up early to read the news when I was younger!
