Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products That Actually Work, and Don’t Cost the Earth

Are you looking for eco-friendly cleaning products that actually work? I’ve been searching for the best eco-friendly cleaning products you can buy in the UK for years now. Many I’ve tried simply don’t work, wasting my time and money. I’ve also become more aware of the so-called ‘eco-friendly’ cleaning products that are anything but! In a world of greenwashing, I think cleaning products are up there with the worst offenders. But there is hope! I’ve found a range of eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning products that work just as well as your supermarket ones. Plus, if you can buy in bulk, they are cost-effective. And they are zero-waste as you refill your bottles and send the containers back! So carry on reading for my favourite sustainable cleaning products.

The Best Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products from Miniml

I’ve been using refillable Miniml eco-friendly cleaning products for years now, and they’ve never let me down! They are a UK-based company that makes non-toxic, sustainable cleaning products in Yorkshire. Miniml products are designed to be safer alternatives to conventional, harsh cleaners. That means they’re gentler on surfaces, skin, and the environment. Miniml make most cleaning products, including washing up liquid, laundry detergent, fabric softener, toilet cleaner and surface spray. They also have some personal care products, including hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. They sell a range of sizes for different households and storage needs. I love their big 5 litre bottles, which let you have your own refill store at home!

Miniml Eco-Friendly Washing Up Liquid Refill and Toilet Cleaner Refill pouches that can be recycled

I started off buying the smaller refill pouches, as I thought it was risky buying a lot, in case I didn’t get on with it. But I loved them. When I ran out, I invested in the bulk containers, with pumps, for the cleaning products I use a lot.

Just squeeze the liquid into your refillable bottle, and rinse and return the pouches to be reused for other customers.

The Tried and Tested Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products I Use in my Kitchen

As you’d expect, I get through loads of eco-friendly cleaning products in the kitchen. We use the Miniml Eco Anti-Bac Surface Cleaner, which comes in several scents on all our surfaces, including the induction hob, with great results. I initially bought it in a glass spray bottle, and now I just refill it when needed.

I also rate their Eco Washing Up Liquid in Rhubarb and Lemon. We get the 1 litre pouches, as we have a dishwasher, so we don’t use masses. Plus, a little goes a long way with this washing up liquid! But it does come in big 5 litre zero waste containers if you want to stock up.

I also LOVE their Anti-Bac Hand Soap in the scent Clementine, it smells lush, and works well without stripping skin. I just refill our pump containers for the kitchen, the bathroom and the cloakroom. We go through a lot of this, so this is one of my favourite bulk buys.

Recommended Eco-Friendly Bathroom Cleaning Products

Eco-friendly cleaning is also important in the bathroom. I’m sure, like me, you’ve accidentally inhaled a cloud of toxic cleaning spray before, and it’s not good for us! In fact, research has shown people using cleaning chemicals regularly could result in a decline in lung function. The same study found that cleaning for 10 to 20 years had a comparable effect of smoking a pack of cigarettes every day! So that’s a good enough reason for me to switch to kinder, cleaner cleaning products, aside from the environmental benefits. As an asthma sufferer, I can feel the difference in my breathing, compared to when I’ve cleaned with mainstream chemical-laden products in the past.

So for me, an eco-friendly clean looks like refillable Eco Toilet Cleaner from Miniml, and their bleach-free Cucumber and Mint Anti-Bac Bathroom Cleaner. As with the eco kitchen cleaning solutions, these non-toxic bathroom cleaning products work brilliantly, without the cloud of fumes.

We use a squeegee on our shower screen after each shower so we don’t need to descale it so often. I think that’s much better than buying a shower cleaning spray, which are no match for the hard water we live with!

My At Home Refill Station with 5 Litre Containers of Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products

This is my mini refill station, in our utility room. I have 5 litre containers of Miniml eco-friendly cleaner for the kitchen, and the bathroom, lemon scented white vinegar, anti-bac hand soap and non-bio laundry liquid. I got the pumps from Miniml, to make it easier to dispense the products when I refill my smaller containers.

They can drip a bit after use, so I bought these cute little plastic pails, and use a cable tie to keep them in the right place to catch the drips. I tried metal pails first, but they went rusty, so although I try to avoid plastic, it does have its use here!

I’m lucky to have the space for this, but if you don’t, you can buy the 1 litre pouches instead.

How I Use White Vinegar Around the Home

I go through loads of white vinegar, as it’s a great eco-friendly all-around cleaner. This white vinegar is also scented with lemon, so it doesn’t smell like a chip shop. I use it instead of fabric conditioner, to help soften fabric, and neutralise odours in things like running tops. It’s also a cheaper alternative to dishwasher rinse aid. You can also use white vinegar to clean windows and to kill weeds, and lots of other things!

Are Miniml Eco Cleaning Products Actually Non-Toxic?

Miniml products are generally considered non-toxic, eco-friendly, and safe for households with pets and children. Their cleaning range is plant-based, biodegradable, and free from harsh chemicals like parabens, phosphates, and synthetic dyes.

  • Miniml use plant-based, natural, or natural-origin ingredients derived from sources like coconut and rapeseed.
  • They’re free from SLS, SLES, parabens, phosphates, and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), making them safer for indoor air quality.
  • Mimiml’s formulas are hypoallergenic and suitable for cleaning areas around pets, such as bedding and feeding areas.
  • They’re vegan, cruelty-free, and designed for a circular, refillable, zero-waste system.

Can I Recycle Miniml Containers and Pouches?

Miniml operate a ‘closed-loop’ recycling system. You can send back the bottles and pouches and they’ll reuse them, which is better than recycling! For the pouches, they send you a freepost paper envelope. When you’ve finished the bulky plastic containers, just pack them in an old box. Then fill in a form online for them to collect the box. They even bring the label, so it couldn’t be easier.

Where to Buy Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products That Actually Work

You can buy Miniml Eco cleaning products directly from them online. You can either buy them as a one off, or subscribe for better prices. It’s a flexible subscription, so you can move your delivery back if you don’t need any more.

Buying refillable cleaning products in bulk helps:

  • saves time and money
  • stops you having to lug heavy single-use plastic containers back from the supermarket
