When I decorated Ava’s nursery six years ago, we decided not to splash out on those lovely but expensive furniture sets. Instead, I bought a cheap white IKEA wardrobe and chest of drawers, with plastic see-through panels.
The picture above shows how it looked, back when Thea had a toddler bed. I lined the panels with one a strong linen-feel paper tablecloth, and it’s lasted surprisingly well. But after six years, they are starting to look a bit tatty, and I’ve gone off the pattern.
I recently went to London and couldn’t resist popping into my new favourite store Hema, at Euston station. Well what a treasure trove it is! I spotted some cute paper tablecloths for £4 each. They measure 138 x 220cm, so I thought that would be plenty to reline the wardrobe and drawers.
What You Need For My Easy Furniture Update
All you need is the tablecloth, scissors and sellotape. You might need a tape measure, but I didn’t end up using mine in the end.
Just cut sections of paper, slightly larger than each panel, and stick it on to the insides of the doors with sellotape! It couldn’t be much easier. When I did it last time, I used the check and it drove me a bit bonkers getting the lines straight. The paper has a slight stretch to it, so it doesn’t stay straight. This time was much easier as the pattern is more random, so it doesn’t matter that it’s a bit skewed.
I love the new pattern so much better than the old one, and Thea loves it.

The Finished Effect Of My Easy Furniture Update
It’s such a simple thing to do but I think it makes the rather plain furniture look much more playful. It’s quite a subtle effect, but it also stops any messy clothes on the inside showing through!
I’m now on the look out for confetti-style wall stickers to carry the theme onto the walls. The other side of her room needs refreshing as her stickers are peeling off a little bit, and the bar of her bed crosses though them!
Etsy has a good selection and I love the metallic dots from Nutmeg Studio – maybe a bit grown up for Thea, but perfect for our monochrome and copper office.
What do you think of my easy furniture update? I hope you like it! Please let me know if you can recommend any stickers.

What a transformation and such a simple update! I love that type of outcome! Simplest is often most effective, and best thing is it won’t look babyish as she grows up. Thanks for sharing!! #HomeEtc
Oh what a great idea! I’d have never thought of doing that.
We bought spotty wall stickers from etsy – you could choose the colours so I’m sure you’d find some there x
Thanks Colette, I’ll pop over and have a peek! Exciting! xx

Ah thank you Karen, it couldn’t be cheaper really! xx
This is a great idea and something you can change whenever the mood takes you. I have seen cut out wardrobes that use a fabric inlay but your version is much more versatile! #homeetc
