Beauty on a Budget: 4

My next quest is to find a cheaper replacement for my Evolve Cleansing Balm, which somehow melts away make-up, yet doesn’t leave a horrid film on my face.

I saw a post online recommending Waitrose’s Baby Bottom Butter, and I had some already, from trying loads of creams on Ava’s eczema.

It’s basically just olive oil, and I was a bit nervous about that, having suffered with spots since my early teens. But new oily products are sometimes now recommended for oily skin, as oil dissolves oil, so it’s worth a try.

I scooped a bit out and spread it over my face. Imagine smearing lard over your face. It felt like that, but fortunately smelled nicer, as they have put vanilla in it.

I knew rinsing it with water wouldn’t cut it, so I had a muslin square ready, soaked in hot water. I used it to wipe (or maybe scrub is a better word) the gunk off my face. And then rinsed my skin again with warm water.

Whilst I did feel it removed the make-up, it left a greasy film over my skin.

I dug out a bottle of Boots Botanics Micellar water and used a cotton pad to sweep it over my face. That felt better.

I did this for four nights, and unfortunately I had spots as well as fine wrinkles jostling for space on my face.

I suppose I should have tried it for a little longer, to see if my skin gets used to it, but I dread to think how I would look. My skin did feeling more moisturised, so maybe it would work on very dry skin, but it was a no-no for my combination face.

Next I found a tub of Bee Balme, another of Ava’s leftovers. This was actually really great for her skin, I used to smother it over her before she went swimming, at her swimming teacher’s suggestion. (Read more about our eczema tips here.) It has similar ingredients to the Bottom Butter, but this also has beeswax and propolis, and doesn’t smell as nice, but I thought I might as well give it a go.

It didn’t leave as much of a film over my face, but I still user the micellar and it felt pretty good.

It’s been two days now, and so far so good. I’ll keep going with it, and see how I get on. The tub is enormous, so if it works, I’ll definitely save some money anyway!
