Paper. As a stationary addict, it’s one of my favourite things.ย Learning a new craft. Also one of my favourite things, as you’ll know if you’ve been following my blog or Instagram for a while.ย So combine the two in an origami workshop and you have Becky-Heaven.
A few weeks ago, I went along to Southwood Stores, near Milton Keynes, to learn origami with the lovely Esther from Origami-Est. It was a birthday treat to myself, and my sister Debbie, and one of my best friendsย (also called Becky) came too. There were two lovely ladies on our table, and another five origami fans on the other table.
Learning Origami, Step by Step
Esther provides everything you need to fold 20 origamiย pyramids, and we could choose from a selection of gorgeous papers. I chose this confetti paper but you can do any kind you like.
Learning Origami with a Very Patient Teacher
Although I didn’t find the origami difficult, it does take a while to get into it and remember which bit to fold, when. Luckily, Esther is a very patient teacher!
The workshop lasted three hours, and we madeย our 20 origami pyramids, but didn’t manage to glue them all in that. This *may* have been because we were chatting too much. The ladies on the other table finished theirs in the allotted time. So OK yeah we were having too much fun.
Estherย showed us all how to fold our paper squares into shapes that look a bit link tiny kites. Next, we inflated them into mini pyramids – we all had to wipe off our lipgloss and lipstick at this point!

We finished off our lights at home and were all so pleased with how they turned out.

Learning Origami is So Much Fun
If you want to learn origami from Esther, she has several workshops coming up.
Our workshop wasย ยฃ30 each and included all materials, tea and biscuits and lots of chat. I am eyeing up a lampshade workshop next… watch this space to see if I can fit it in!
As a side note, I highly recommend a visit toย Southwood Stores, either in person, or online. It’s jam-packedย with gorgeous Scandi influenced homewares and clothing, and the owner Hayley is so lovely. It is a great place to go Christmas shopping. Or just shopping for goodies for yourself!

OHMYGOD!!!!!! I’VE GOT THAT BOOK!!!!!! Can’t believe that it’s by the person you went on a workshop with!!! Your lights turned out beautifully! I’ve tried to do a bit of origami by following YouTube tutorials, I’m definitely not a natural!
Oh this is SUCH a fabulous idea. Could be a great way to use up old wallpaper which I never know what to do with!

Hubby works in printing and is so good with paper objects, when he met me, he told me he was a professional origamist! haha!! Honest answer was he folds paper for a job….on a machine! This looks like a great craft skill and very fun

Wow Becky these are fab. I have a pad or origami paper my sister gave me but I haven’t tried it out yet. One the the girls taking part in my #AdventCraftSwap over on Instagram got sent some origami decorations by her swap partner. I love the fairy light idea too.
