My Am-Dram childhood

What extra-curricular activities did you do when you were a kid? Football? Swimming lessons? Something else normal?

Well we went to an amateur dramatics society. All of us.

Here we are in ‘Oliver!’ I think my dad was the Doctor, mum was some kind of housekeeper/workhouse woman (still acting the part in the photo) and us kids were street urchins.

Debbie had a speaking part but me and Pete were just there to look mucky and bulk out Fagin’s gang, I think.

I’m pretty sure we burned corks and smudged them over our skin, though that sounds kind of dangerous, so maybe I have remembered that incorrectly. I definitely put cold cream in my hair to make it look greasy.

Here’s a tip: never put cold cream in your hair.

It took weeks to wash it all out.

Hard to believe, but this wasn’t the highlight of my stage career. Oh no. I was also Bashful in ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. Thankfully, I don’t think any photographic evidence survived.
