In my experience, clean mineral sunscreen is very hit or miss. Maybe they look like white grease paint, or are super greasy, or drying. I’m always looking for natural mineral sunscreens that feel light, absorb easily, and protect skin without chemical filters.
When I saw Husk & Seed Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 pop up on my social media, I was super excited. It seems to offer it all: a clean mineral formula, broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sun protection, a moisturising feel, no white cast, reef-safe, a refillable glass bottle, and a company with great ethics. So I ordered a bottle, and couldn’t wait to try it out.
So does Husk & Seed Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 live up to my high standards? Read on to find out.
Husk & Seed Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 Review
This Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 is ยฃ26 for 30ml, which is on the pricey side for a small bottle, but it is a truly clean beauty product. Husk & Seed say:
“Our Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 offers broad-spectrum UVA and UVB defence using non-nano zinc oxide โ without the synthetic filters, preservatives, or irritation common in chemical sunscreens. It protects, soothes, and hydrates in one step.
The formula is 100% natural and completely free from fillers. Every ingredient serves a purpose: to nourish the skin, support the barrier, and leave a soft, natural finish without white cast or greasiness. Scented with neroli and nonโphoto-toxic bergamot, this formula offers a gentle, uplifting aroma without increasing sensitivity to sunlight.
And from my experience, this is all true.
It smells gorgeous, and feels like a rich, nourishing serum. However I do find it can sting my eyes and make them water, I presume due to the bergamot oil.
Is this Sunscreen Reef Safe?
There isn’t a globally recognised scheme for reef safe products and some companies can sneakily claim this, even if they contain ingredients that may damage sea life. So the sunscreen ingredients to avoid are:
- Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)
- Benzophenone-1
- Benzophenone-8
- Octinoxate
- Octocrylene
- 3-Benzylidene camphor
- 4-methylbenzylidene camphor
- OD-PABA
Husk & Seed Natural Mineral Sunscreen is Reef Safe, as it doesn’t include any of these ingredients. Here are the ingredients it does contain:
Non-nano Zinc oxide, Rubus idaeus seed oil, Prunus domestica seed oil, Simmondsia chinensis seed oil, Citrus aurantium amara flower oil, Citrus aurantium bergamia fruit oil, Caprylic/capric triglyceride (derived from coconut), Glyceryl isostearate (derived from coconut oil), Polyhydroxystearic acid (derived from castor oil) Tocopherol, Linalol*, Limonene*, Geraniol*, Farnesol, Citral*, Eugenol*, Citronellol**naturally occurring in essential oils
How Does Husk & Seed Natural Mineral Sunscreen Perform?
To apply this natural mineral sunscreen, you have to shake the bottle well, and dispense four pumps/half a teaspoon. As you can see, it’s a pale yellow in tone, but it doesn’t show any colour when you apply it.
There is no white cast, it smoothes on beautifully and feels like you’re applying a rich skincare product.
However it is quite oily, and shiny, which is unfortunate. I have to blot it with a tissue once it’s sunk in, to remove the worst of the oily film. Personally it’s too oily for me, as my skin looks very shiny.
Since I bought this sunscreen, they have changed the packaging to a glass bottle with a spout pourer and non-leak cap.
How Does Husk & Seed SPF30 Wear Under Make-up?
I took some photos of me using Husk & Seed Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF30 beneath my make-up at the start of the day and end of the day. I didn’t touch up my make-up at all, and it stayed in place pretty well. It doesn’t look too shiny in the photos but it is quite a glowy finish – a bit too oily looking for me.

My Verdict on Husk & Seed Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF30
I really wanted to love this natural mineral sunscreen. It has so much going for it. But there are a few things about it that mean I can’t recommend it wholeheartedly. The greasy feel is too much for me – I’d say my skin is normal for my age (mid-40s) so it would be much better if you have dry skin. But the occasional eye stinging is also an issue for me. That said, I have carried on using it and have used it all up, so it is very useable.
If you want to try this sunscreen you can buy it for ยฃ26 here. I don’t recommend this for oily skinned beauties though!
Since buying this sunscreen, Husk & Seed have added a new version, with no essential oils and a higher SPF of 50. It’s called Super Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF50. I think that would be worth trying over the SPF30 version, if you have dry skin. If you have oily skin, I recommend trying Kri Mineral sunscreen.
