Now that I’ve finished the girls’ reading den, I’m planning my next room makeover. And this one has been a long time in the making. My thoughts are turning to creating a more cosy, welcoming master bedroom. And I want to do our bedroom makeover in the most eco-friendly way that I can, whilst still making it look fab, of course. So what’s on my eco-friendly bedroom makeover plan? Read on to find out!
How Our Bedroom Looks Now
Before sharing my plans, you need to see what I’m working with. This is how our master bedroom looks currently:
There is nothing particularly bad about this space, but it’s definitely lacking in personality. But I do have to remember how it looked when we first moved in. Brace yourself for the estate agent’s photo:
When we moved in six years ago, we did the basics. We stripped the wallpaper, knocked out some poorly built-in wardrobes, painted in Crown’s Sail White, and got the ancient carpet replaced. The curtains were swapped for a simple white thermal roller blind. Later, we got new oak doors and handles to replace the horrible 70s chipboard doors and brown plastic handles. And that’s as far as we got. Whilst we have put tonnes of personality into the rest of our house, I feel the bedroom lets us down a bit.
Furniture Plans for Our Eco-Friendly Bedroom Makeover
As you can see from the photos above, we’ve crammed quite a lot of furniture into our master bedroom! I find all that oak-effect furniture quite oppressive, as it’s darkened with age. We bought it all to go in our first house about 13 years ago. Although it isn’t really to my taste now, it still works, so we won’t be replacing it as I don’t want it to end up in landfill!
Instead, I have a plan to paint (some of it at least) with Frenchic furniture paint, which is eco friendly. You can see my last Frenchic project with it here, where I painted an old tea trolley to create a bar cart. This project is much more ambitious! I plan to mirror the mid-century style bedside tables, by painting the drawer fronts in white.
I hope that will lift the whole room and give our bedroom furniture a new eco-friendly lease of life.
I’ll be keeping our sconce lights, as I still love them. I got the cables and bulbs from Creative Cable and looped them over some IKEA brackets.
Wall Paint Plans for Our Eco-Friendly Bedroom Makeover
The biggest thing our master bedroom is missing is depth of colour. I do generally favour light coloured walls: our house has white, off white, or pale grey walls. I’ve been saving gorgeous bedroom inspo on Pinterest and Instagram for months. I’m still trying to decide between dark blue and dark green – or maybe something in between!
One thing I do know is that I want to use eco-friendly paint.ย Graphenstoneย have a few gorgeous dark greens and blues. Iโm keen on Oxford, Blue Steel, Cerulean and Brunswick. What do you think?
Graphenstone’s lime-based paints are free from VOCs, carcinogens or toxic substances. They also actually reduce CO2: as the lime carbonates, it absorbs CO2ย from the ambient air and cleans the air that you breathe. Pretty clever stuff, right!
Finishing Touches in Our Eco-Friendly Bedroom Makeover
I’ve been on an origami workshop and made a big origami lampshade. I am yet to put it up, but here is a sneak peek:
As you can see, it’s white with black ‘sprinkles’. So this will be the basis for accessories in our master bedroom makeover. I’m planning to decorate our plain white blind to match, as it works fine. I need to experiment, but I think I could paint onto it with Frenchic paint. I even have some left over from when I painted our fireplace hearth. It’s in the shade ‘Blackjack’ which is the perfect rich black.
I’ll be adding some more plants too, to try and make it a tranquil, healthy space.
