6 of the Best: Natural, Organic and Clean Facial Sunscreen Review

6 of the Best: Natural, Organic and Clean Facial Sunscreen Review

Natural, organic and clean body sunscreen that doesn’t make you look like a ghost is quite hard to come by, in my experience. So when it comes to natural, organic and clean facial sunscreens, it’s even harder to find a good one. So I have put six of them to the test, to see which sit well beneath make-up, and keep skin looking and feeling good.

I bought the Madara and Hynt natural, organic and clean facial sunscreens myself, and was sent the others to review.

6 of the Best: natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen review

As you can see, six of these natural, organic and clean facial sunscreens are white in colour, and two are skin toned, so which perform best? Read on to see how each natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen looks on my hand, when it’s partially rubbed in, and then how my skin looks after 6 hours of wear (scroll down for the comparison). I am also wearing Madara Hyaluronic Anti-Pollution CC Cream and Nude by Nature mineral foundation and powder in each photo, and have not retouched my make-up, or the photos.

Kimberly Sayer natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen (gifted for review)

This natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen has been a firm favourite of mine for many years, and I wrote  detailed review previously, which you can read here. It’s perfect for oily and combination skin, sinks in like a dream, and moisturises well without greasiness. The pump bottle also lasts for ages, at 120ml, and you can easily see when it’s running out thanks to the transparent bottle. It also makes a great make-up base.

They say: “A lightweight, protective day cream with mineral sunscreen that’s easily absorbed and won’t clog pores or cause breakouts… non-toxic sunblock derived from minerals Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide offer UV-A and UV-B protection from the sun without irritating the most sensitive of skin.”

COLOUR: white
EASY TO RUB IN? yes
GREASY? no
GOOD MAKE UP BASE? yes
SPF: 30
BROAD SPECTRUM UVA/UVB? yes
FRAGRANCE: lemon

GREAT FOR: Every day use, all year round, and ideal for oily and combination skin (if you have dry skin, Kimberly Sayer have a version for you too here.)

ANY DOWNSIDES? I have read on other blogs that the lemon oil in this lotion is not great for skin, but I haven’t found any problems myself.

BUY HERE*: Kimberly Sayer Ultra Light Organic Facial Moisturiser SPF30, £26.50 for 120ml.

Green People natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen (gifted for review)

This natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen from Green People is a bit of a nightmare to rub in, but once it’s absorbed it doesn’t feel greasy, and makes a great make-up base. It gives broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, and is free from fragrance.

They say: “Effective, broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Non-irritating, suitable for sensitive skin and those prone to prickly heat. Non-greasy and non-whitening, can be worn on its own or under make-up.”

COLOUR: white
EASY TO RUB IN? no, it takes a while!
GREASY? slightly to begin with, but that soon goes
GOOD MAKE UP BASE? yes
SPF: 30
BROAD SPECTRUM UVA/UVB? yes
FRAGRANCE: none

GREAT FOR: All skin types, reliable protection that you can easily see when applying, and no fragrance.

ANY DOWNSIDES? It is time consuming to rub in. But once it’s absorbed, it’s great.

BUY HERE*: Green People Facial Sun Cream SPF30, £18 for 50ml.

Madara natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen

I was worried this tinted natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen would be way too dark for my skin, but actually it blends in well. It is a touch dark, but my skin is very fair. I find this suncream a little heavy and greasy for my combination skin, but think it would be great for dryer skin types. It does sink in well and feel lovely and moisturising.

They say: “This breakthrough mineral-based natural face sunscreen ensures broad spectrum UVA/UVB protecion with an invisible, flawless finish and SPF30. It works to prevent all types of sun damage, including dryness, wrinkles, pigmentation, dark spots and loss of volume.”

COLOUR: warm-toned medium brown, which blends in well
EASY TO RUB IN? yes
GREASY? slightly
GOOD MAKE UP BASE? yes but possibly not for very oily skin, better for dry skin
SPF: 30
BROAD SPECTRUM UVA/UVB? yes
FRAGRANCE: light, pleasant scent

GREAT FOR: Medium skin tones and dryer skin types.

ANY DOWNSIDES? I think it would be too rich for oily skin types and it’s a bit dark for me.

BUY HERE*: Madara Plant Stem Cell Age Defying Sunscreen SPF30, £29 for 40ml.

Alteya Organics natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen (gifted for review)

I was dismayed when I first saw the colour of this 100% natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen, as it is quite dark and pink toned. However, once I applied it to my face, it did disappear and left a lovely matte finish. It is not at all oily, and does’t make skin shiny.

They say: “Effective and safe protection – completely free of harmful chemicals Broad Spectrum SPF 25/ Sheer Tint Physical zinc oxide sunscreen with high reflective index. Suitable for all skin types and ages. Safe for the reef and all ecosystems. Rich in antioxidants and emollients to soothe and moisturise.”

COLOUR: a pinkish medium brown, which blends in well
EASY TO RUB IN? yes
GREASY? no
GOOD MAKE UP BASE? yes, it dries to a matte finish
SPF: 25
BROAD SPECTRUM UVA/UVB? yes
FRAGRANCE: rose

GREAT FOR: Pink skin tones and oily or combination skin types.

ANY DOWNSIDES? The pink tone is quite strong so won’t work for all skin tones. If you have dry skin, you may need to use a moisturiser before applying it. It has the joint lowest SPF of the suncreams I tested, but is still good at 25.

BUY HERE*: Alteya Certified Organic Rose Otto Facial Sunscreen SPF25, £25 for 50ml.

Jurlique natural and clean facial sunscreen (gifted for review)

This offers the highest sun protection of the natural and clean facial sunscreens I have tested, at SPF50. Despite its high factor, it is light, refreshing and quite easily absorbed. It gives a semi-matte finish which is flattering, but does sting the eyes if it gets too close to them.

They say: “High-level sun protection infused with powerful, antioxidant-rich botanicals to defend against the harmful effects of UV rays and pollution. The oil-free, ultra-lightweight texture syncs with skin beautifully, leaving an invisible veil of protection and a flattering, satin finish. Skin is left protected, happily hydrated, and perfectly primed.”

COLOUR: white
EASY TO RUB IN? yes
GREASY? no
GOOD MAKE UP BASE? yes
SPF: 50
BROAD SPECTRUM UVA/UVB? yes
FRAGRANCE: lavender

GREAT FOR: Very skin sensitive skin as it has the highest SPF available.

ANY DOWNSIDES? It does sting the eyes if you get it too close. Although Jurlique don’t test their products on animals themselves, they do sell in China, which means a 3rd party tests their products, which is the law there. I was not aware of this before I received this product, but now that I know it, I won’t be buying any products as I do not agree with animal testing for cosmetics. You can read Jurlique’s policy on animal testing here.

BUY HERE: Jurlique UV Defence Lotion SPF50, £27 for 50ml.

Hynt Beauty natural and clean facial sunscreen

I bought a sample of this natural and clean facial sunscreen, and loved it so much I bought the full size version, despite its hefty price tag of £49. It’s a pleasure to use, sinking in well and giving a lovely semi-matte finish that makes the perfect make-up base.

They say: “Naturally shields the delicate skin from UVA/UVB rays with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant rich organic plant extracts that also help to soothe and protect the skin. Lightweight feel with a transparent, non-greasy finish. Can be used as a sun protectant, moisturiser and primer in one.”

COLOUR: transparent
EASY TO RUB IN? very
GREASY? no
GOOD MAKE UP BASE? yes, very good
SPF: 25
BROAD SPECTRUM UVA/UVB: yes
FRAGRANCE: watermelon

GREAT FOR: Every day use, all year round, and great for oily and combination skin.

ANY DOWNSIDES? It’s expensive, and has the joint lowest SPF value of the sunscreens I have tested.

BUY HERE*: Hynt Beauty Sun Prep Broad Spectrum SPF25, £49 for 50ml.

Which is my favourite natural, organic and clean facial sunscreen?

I think all of these natural, organic and clean facial sunscreens are good, and have been happy to use all of them. I wore each sunscreen instead of a moisturiser, before adding Madara Hyaluronic Anti-Pollution CC Cream and Nude by Nature mineral foundation and powder. I took each photo after about six hours, without retouching my make-up. I have not filtered the photos.

As you can see from the photos, none of them make skin white, or greasy. Some of them leave more of a shine after six hours, but adding a touch of powder would soon sort that out. For my skin type, which is combination I think Hynt Beaut, Alteya and Kimberly Sayer are best, but I think the Madara sunscreen would be perfect for dryer skin types. The Green People sunscreen is also a great all rounder, particularly if you need to avoid fragrance.

In terms of sun protection, they have all worked well, even in Britain’s recent heat wave. I am not a sunbather though, and do seek out the shade. All of these natural, organic and clean facial sunscreens need to be reapplied regularly, after two to three hours. .

Great post Becky. I currently use the Kimberley Sayer moisturiser and I love it! I have been looking at the Hynt Beauty one though, as I was looking for one I can use over another moisturiser that doesn’t have SPF. The price tag has always put me off until now but I might have to give it a go!

I found Madara sunscreen great on my combination skin, really love this sunscreen and the fact that it reduces the appearance of fine lines.

I wonder if I find it a little heavy as I wear the CC cream over the top – I will try it without and see if it feels less heavy! xx
