Reasons to Choose a Reef-Safe Mineral Sunscreen
There are two types of sunscreen and one is better for you, and for the planet. Mineral sunscreens are known as physical sunscreens as they act as a physical barrier to reflect the sun’s harmful rays away from your skin. Instead of getting absorbed into your skin, the sit on it, making reapplying extra important. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV light before it reaches your skin. They use synthetic blends, some of which have been shown to damage coral reefs.
Mineral sunscreens generally use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to provide the physical barrier. This can mean they look white and pasty, and can be difficult to blend in to your skin. Choosing a ‘non-nano’ mineral formula is important, both for your own heath (if it’s a nano-particle it can be absorbed into your skin) and for sea life, as it will be less likely to be absorbed by them. So I look for non-nano zinc oxide, which is what provides the sun protection for RMS SunCoverup.
How Do I Know If A Sunscreen is Reef Safe?
There isn’t a globally recognised scheme for reef safe products and some companies can sneakily claim this, even if they contain ingredients that may damage sea life. So the sunscreen ingredients to avoid are:
- Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)
- Benzophenone-1
- Benzophenone-8
- Octinoxate
- Octocrylene
- 3-Benzylidene camphor
- 4-methylbenzylidene camphor
- OD-PABA
RMS SunCoverup Super Tint is Reef Safe, as it doesn’t include any of these ingredients.
SunCoverup Super Tint SPF 50 Review
I have long been a fan of RMS Beauty. Their concealer was one of my first clean beauty buys, and their mascara and lip products are excellent.
So I was confident I’d like SunCoverup Super Tint SPF 50. It arrives in a recyclable cardboard box and is housed in a glass bottle with a plastic air-lock pump. RMS Beauty say:
“This long-wearing, skin-loving multitasker hydrates skin, protects from the sunโs damaging rays as well as defends against blue light with Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, and provides lightweight, breathable coverage that effortlessly evens skin tone for a naturally radiant complexion.”
And from my experience, this is all true.
It has both UVA and UVB protection (A is ageing and B is burning) and you can apply it over make-up. It comes in 13 sheer, flexible shades, and scores ‘Excellent’ on the Yuka app.
How Does RMS SunCoverup SPF50 Look?
So I’m really happy with all the ingredient credentials in this clean tinted sunscreen. But how does it actually look and feel on your skin?
Let’s take a look. I’ve taken some photos to show how RMS tinted sunscreen/foundation hybrid looks on my pale, white skin.
It blends in beautifully and feels light on the skin. I chose the shade ‘Ivory’ which is the second palest shade, and it’s a fraction too dark for my very pale skin. So I’ve ordered ‘Alabaster’ this time and am waiting for it to be delivered.
How Does RMS SunCoverup Super Tint SPF50 Look Under Make-up?
Here are some photos wearing SunCoverup as foundation at the start of the day and end of the day. As you can see, my make-up stayed in place well, and didn’t slide off or go horrid and greasy.
I’m also wearing Madara Concealer, Love the Planet Loose Mineral Powder Lily Lolo Cream Blush, and Inika Bold Lash Mascara on top of the RMS tinted sunscreen.
In this photo, I also put more sunscreen on top of my make-up to see how well it went on when reapplying. It didn’t ruin my make-up or make it go lumpy. I tapped it on and it just made it look the tiniest bit shiny for a little while and then went semi-matte. I’m really impressed!
So, if you want clean foundation that also gives high SPF protection, RMS SunCoverup might be the only multitasking make-up you need!
I highly recommend this clean, low-waste mineral foundation sunscreen from RMS. It has excellent ethical and eco credentials and works really well! If you have very dry skin, you may want to apply moisturiser before applying the sunscreen. I wore this SPF50 foundation on a holiday to Crete and didn’t burn at all.
As with all tinted products, be careful of transfer onto your collar. I use my non-tinted body sunscreen on my neck for this reason.
